Buying Australian dollars (AUD) before travelling to Australia
In Australia, almost everything is paid for by card, and from 1 October 2026, retailers will no longer be allowed to charge a surcharge for doing so. Even so, it is worth arriving with some cash for the first few days, and if you are travelling on a Work and Holiday visa, considerably more than that. A country where card payments are the norm
In Australia, contactless payments are everywhere: cafés, supermarkets, public transport, weekend markets… Until now, many retailers added a small surcharge when you paid by card. This changes on 1 October 2026: the Reserve Bank of Australia is removing surcharges for payments made with Visa, Mastercard or eftpos, and American Express has decided to do the same. However, the rule only applies to card payment surcharges; weekend or public holiday surcharges charged by some restaurants will remain legal.
Just because the retailer does not charge you anything does not mean the payment is free: your Spanish bank may charge you a fee for each payment in a foreign currency. So, if you are planning to pay mainly by card, the Travel Money Card may be worth considering, as it can be loaded with Australian dollars at the current exchange rate. Otherwise, having some cash for the first few days and for unexpected expenses is usually enough.

If you are travelling on a Work and Holiday visa
Every year, 3,400 young Spanish citizens can obtain a Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462) to live and work in Australia for up to one year, with the possibility of extending their stay. If this applies to you, the first few weeks are when you are likely to need the most money: accommodation while you look for somewhere to live, transport, food and everything else you need until you receive your first salary. The Australian authorities may ask you to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself at the beginning of your stay, and around AUD 5,000 is generally considered sufficient as a guideline.
You do not need to carry all of this money in cash. Having some banknotes for the first few days and the rest on the Travel Money Card, our free virtual travel card, or in your bank account is usually more practical while you open an account with an Australian bank.
Which banknotes will you find (and which ones are no longer valid)
Australia was the first country to introduce polymer banknotes, and they are now all made from polymer: $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100, each in a different colour. The $5 banknote still features Queen Elizabeth II, but it will not be replaced with one featuring King Charles III: the central bank has already announced that the new design will be dedicated to the culture of Australia's First Peoples, although no date has yet been set.
The coins are 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, as well as $1 and $2. The 1 and 2 cent coins were withdrawn in the early 1990s, so cash payments are rounded to the nearest 5 cents. With a card, however, you pay the exact amount.

Before leaving Spain
For tourism or visiting family, Spanish passport holders need the eVisitor visa (subclass 651). It is free, you apply online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs website, and it allows stays of up to three months at a time, with as many entries as you wish over a 12-month period. Beware of intermediary websites that charge a fee to process the application.
As for cash, Australia requires you to declare AUD 10,000 or more, or the equivalent amount in another currency, when entering or leaving the country. Failure to do so can result in fines or even imprisonment. When leaving Spain with €10,000 or more, you must also submit form S1 to the Spanish Tax Agency.
