Paying by card in the USA
If the ATM offers you the option to pay in euros or dollars, always choose dollars. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) is usually more expensive.
Check your bank's fees for card payments in foreign currencies and cash withdrawals.
Hotels and car rental companies place a deposit on a credit card, so make sure you have one.

The US dollar in 2026: notes, coins and the end of the cent
Banknotes: $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
Coins: 1¢ (penny), 5¢ (nickel), 10¢ (dime), 25¢ (quarter), 50¢ and $1.
The USA stopped minting the one-cent coin in November 2025. It remains legal tender, but fewer are in circulation, and many businesses round cash payments to the nearest 5 cents.
Travelling to Latin America? The US dollar is also an official currency there
USD is the official currency in Ecuador, El Salvador and Puerto Rico. In Panama, it circulates alongside the balboa. Outside the Americas, it is also an official currency in Timor-Leste, the Marshall Islands, Palau and Micronesia.

Leaving Spain with cash: limits and declarations
- When leaving Spain: you must declare €10,000 or more (or the equivalent in US dollars) per person and per journey using the S1 form from the Spanish Tax Agency. There is no charge for making the declaration. Failure to do so may result in a fine of €600 or more and the money being detained.
- When arriving in the USA: you must also declare amounts over $10,000 to US Customs.
