Is it worth taking US dollars to Mexico?
It depends on where you are going, but it is almost never the best option. In tourist areas such as Cancún and Playa del Carmen, hotels, restaurants and shops often accept US dollars. The problem is the exchange rate they offer: it is usually worse than the market rate, and any change is given back to you in pesos. Outside these areas, at food stalls, markets, on local transport or in museums, pesos are usually the only currency accepted.
Also, in Mexico, the peso uses the $ symbol. In tourist areas, you may see prices in pesos and dollars written in almost the same way, so if in doubt, always ask which currency the price is in before paying.
Banknotes and coins
Mexican banknotes range from 20 to 1,000 pesos. The Bank of Mexico is gradually withdrawing older series, but they remain legal tender and can still be used normally: when they reach a bank, however, they are no longer put back into circulation.

Tipping: voluntary but customary
In Mexico, tips are not included in the bill and, according to the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco), they are always voluntary: a restaurant cannot add a tip automatically. Even so, it is customary to leave between 10% and 15% of the total, so it is useful to carry some small-denomination pesos for tips in restaurants, hotels or when using guides.

Before leaving Spain
If you are travelling to Mexico as a tourist, you do not need a visa, and the maximum stay is 180 days. On arrival, the authorities may ask you to show your return ticket, hotel booking and proof that you have sufficient financial means for your stay, so it is worth keeping all of these documents readily available. If you have dual Spanish and Mexican nationality, you must enter and leave the country using your Mexican passport.
If you are travelling to Cancún, Tulum or anywhere else in Quintana Roo, bear in mind the Visitax, a tax paid by foreign visitors which is MXN 285 in 2026.
As for cash, Mexico requires amounts exceeding US$10,000 or the equivalent to be declared when entering or leaving the country. When leaving Spain with €10,000 or more, you must also submit the S1 form to the Spanish Tax Agency.
ATMs and cards: a few precautions
Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted at most hotels, restaurants and shops. However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends taking care when using ATMs: it is best to use those located inside shopping centres or monitored areas, and to check your card transactions during your trip, as there have been cases of card cloning. It also advises against keeping all your money, cards and documents in the same place.
