Money you may be asked to show on arrival
This is a requirement that many travellers are unaware of. The Thai authorities remind travellers that, when entering the country without a visa, they may be required to prove that they have 10,000 baht per person or 20,000 baht per family. This can be held in cash in baht, an equivalent amount in another currency, or supported by a document proving that you have access to this amount. Children under 12 are exempt. Checks are not carried out systematically and the final decision rests with the immigration officer, but arriving with this amount in cash is the simplest way to avoid any problems.

Banknotes and coins
Thai banknotes come in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1,000 baht, and all feature the image of the King. The baht is divided into 100 satang: the smaller 25 and 50 satang coins are rarely seen in everyday life, while the most commonly used coins are 1, 2, 5 and 10 baht. In markets, food stalls and tuk-tuks, carry smaller notes: paying with a 1,000-baht note can be difficult if the seller does not have enough change.
ATMs: a fee on every withdrawal
There are ATMs throughout Thailand, but most Thai banks charge around 220 baht for each withdrawal made with a foreign card, in addition to any fees charged by your own bank. If you withdraw small amounts each time, these fees can quickly add up. It is therefore a good idea to carry enough cash for your first few days and, if you need to use an ATM, withdraw larger amounts less frequently. Before confirming the transaction, always check the fee displayed on the screen.

Before leaving Spain
Since 15 September 2026, Spanish citizens can enter Thailand without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, instead of the 60 days previously allowed. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for a further 30-day extension through immigration, subject to approval. In addition, all foreign travellers must complete the Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) on the official website tdac.immigration.go.th within the three days before arrival.
As for cash, Thailand requires travellers to declare any amount of foreign currency exceeding US$20,000 or its equivalent to customs. When leaving Spain with €10,000 or more, you must also submit form S1 to the Spanish Tax Agency.
