Don't forget to buy Moroccan dirhams (MAD) before travelling to Morocco
Are you planning a trip to admire the warm colours of this country? We advise you to plan your holiday carefully and, above all, to carry some cash in the local currency.
The currency used is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). For most purchases, and even for a taxi from the airport, cash is required, so we recommend always carrying some cash with you.
When planning your trip, we recommend preparing a budget and exchanging euros into MAD before departure. This way, you can benefit from a better exchange rate.
Practical tips for planning your budget
You can expect a daily budget of around MAD 495 per person for your trip to Morocco. This will allow you to stay in a 3-star hotel, enjoy two restaurant meals and buy some groceries.
In Morocco, you can choose between guesthouses, hostels and small hotels. In a hostel, accommodation will cost between MAD 63 and MAD 158. If you have a higher budget, you can also find riads at similar prices to luxury hotels.
You can also stay with a local host by booking via the “Morocco chez l’habitant” platform. This can cost between MAD 250 and MAD 450.
If you wish to eat in a restaurant, meals will cost between MAD 50 and MAD 250, depending on the establishment. Street food is cheaper, usually under MAD 50.
When travelling around the country, street food is a quick and convenient option, so we recommend carrying some cash and therefore exchanging euros into MAD in advance.

Following Morocco’s independence in 1960, the dirham was reintroduced as the main currency. The Arabic word “dirham” is derived from the ancient Greek word “drachma”. The plural of dirham is darahim.
The first banknotes, in denominations of 50 and 100 dirhams, were printed on old French francs.
